  • Understanding RV Water Pumps: What You Need to Know
    Jan 03, 2025
When you're out on the road in your RV, you need a reliable water pump to make sure you have water flowing from your tank to your faucets, shower, and toilet. But what kind of water pump is best for your RV, and how does it work? Let’s break it down.   Types of RV Water Pumps: 12V vs 24V There are different types of RV water pumps, but the most common are 12V and 24V pumps. Here’s a quick look at each:   12V RV Water Pump The 12V water pump is the most popular choice for most RVs. It runs off the RV's battery and is great for small to medium-sized RVs. If you're looking for something simple and easy to use, a 12V pump is usually the way to go.   24V RV Water Pump A 24V water pump uses more power and is often found in larger RVs or motorhomes. It provides higher pressure, making it better for larger water systems or if you need more water flow. However, you’ll need a bigger battery to support this pump.   Which Type of RV Water Pump is Right for Your RV? When choosing between a 12V and 24V water pump, consider the size of your RV and how much water you’ll be using. For smaller RVs, a 12V pump will usually do the job. For larger RVs, especially those with multiple bathrooms or large tanks, a 24V pump might be necessary to get the water pressure you need.   How Does the RV Water Pump Connect to the Water Tank? Your RV’s water pump connects directly to the freshwater tank. It pulls water from the tank and sends it through pipes to your faucets and shower. Typically, the pump is connected with flexible hoses that carry the water. A check valve is often installed to stop the water from flowing backward.   Steps to Connect the Pump: Position the pump near the tank: The pump should be placed close to the freshwater tank to keep water flowing smoothly. Connect the intake hose: One hose goes from the pump to the tank, pulling water into the pump. Connect the output hose: Another hose goes from the pump to the water system (faucets, shower, etc.). Where is the RV Water Pump Located? The water pump is usually located in a basement storage compartment or a closet near the freshwater tank. It’s often tucked away in a space where it’s easy to reach but out of the way of daily use. In some RVs, it can be found under the kitchen or bathroom sink.   How to Replace a Broken RV Water Pump If your RV water pump stops working, don’t panic! Replacing it is not as hard as it sounds. Here’s how you can do it:   Steps to Replace Your RV Water Pump: Turn off the power: Disconnect the battery or turn off the power to avoid electrical shocks. Disconnect the hoses: Remove the intake and output hoses from the old pump. Remove the pump: Unscrew the pump from its mount, then take it out. Install the new pump: Place the new pump where the old one was, and screw it in place. Reconnect the hoses: Attach the intake and output hoses to the new pump. Test the pump: Turn on the power and check if water flows properly. Important Tip: Make sure you buy the right 12V or 24V replacement pump, depending on what your RV needs!
