Bilge Pump Basics: What is it, and How Should You Use It?
Sep 26, 2023

A bilge pump is a key piece of equipment found on just about any boat, but for many new boaters in particular, they may find themselves asking the basic question: "What is a bilge pump?"

A bilge pump is a mechanical device used on boats, ships, and other marine vessels to remove water that has accumulated in the bilge. The bilge is the lowest section inside the hull of a vessel, and it tends to collect water from various sources, including rain, spray, splashing, and minor leaks. Bilge pumps are crucial for preventing water accumulation in the bilge, which can lead to safety hazards, stability issues, and even sinking.

how bilge pump work?

Lowest Point in the Bilge: The primary bilge pump should be installed at the lowest point in the bilge. This position ensures that the pump can effectively remove water that has accumulated at the lowest part of the boat's interior.

Multiple Pumps for Larger Boats: Larger vessels may require multiple bilge pumps, each serving different sections or compartments that could retain water. This helps maintain the boat's balance and stability.

Accessibility: Bilge pumps should be easily accessible for inspection, maintenance, and clearing debris from around the pump pickup. Accessibility is crucial to ensure the pump's reliable operation and quick response in case of water accumulation.

Protection from Debris: Avoid placing the pump pickup in areas where it is likely to become clogged with debris or sediment. Regular inspection and cleaning are essential to maintain the pump's efficiency.
